Domains Have Value!
One of the valuable assets that is typically overlooked is the value of the domain of the business.
For example, two of the author’s domains, FairfieldPhoto.com and FairfieldPhotography.com were purchased in 2005 when Fairfield Photography started business. Fairfield Photography is based in Fairfield County, Ohio and was reserved as part of developing the Fairfield Photography business plan.
Turns out, there is also a photographer in Fairfield, Connecticut (and probably one in every city named Fairfield across the country). Fairfield Photography gets calls from prospective clients in Connecticut a few times per year. The photographer in Fairfield Connecticut would probably love the opportunity to purchase this domain.
Instead of just cancelling the registration and letting it lapse back into the available pool of domains, consider reaching out to companies that may find that domain valuable and willing to pay a premium to ensure the domain is transferred to them. The shorter the domain name, the more valuable it will be since it is easier/faster for users to type it into web-browsers and email programs.
Don’t walk away and leave that value behind.
